Rotorua

Rotorua is one of the tourist meccas of the North Island of New Zealand. The population of the city is around 64500. The airport is 11km from the city centre and takes about 15 minutes by taxi. Driving you will find Hamilton city 108km (1hr 40min) north west of Rotorua, Taupo is about 80km (1 hr) south of Rotorua and Wellington is 460km (6hr 20min) south of Rotorua.

There is a strong Maori presence in Rotorua with the New Zealand Maori Arts and Crafts Institute and Te Whakarewarewa Thermal Reserve. You will find a selection of thermal reserves in the city and outlying area. South of Rotorua can be found Mount Tarawera were the Pink and White Terraces used to be located, once called the 'Eight Wonder of the World'. These were destoyed in 1886 by the Mount Tarawera eruption. You will find a display on this in the Rotorua Museum of Art and History, Government Gardens in Rotorua.

The major industry for Roturua is tourism, retail and in the surrounding area agriculture and forestry.

Accommodation in Rotorua includes international hotels and there is a selection of other types of accommodation as well including some historic hotels, bed and breakfasts and modern motels/motor inns.
